These are a series of images from a large format film project on the Verzasca Valley.

In the first series, the focus will be on the area of Lavertezzo, home of the Ponte dei Salti double-arched bridge, and these simply supernatural rock formations. Over millions of years, the river has carved its way through the rock, leaving it smooth and polished.

These images are shot on a large format 4×5 camera, on Kodak TMax 100, Kodak Ektar 100, Fuji Neopan Acros 100, or Ilford Delta 100. Developed in Ilford Perceptol, Kodak XTOL, or ADOX Rodinal, and scanned on an Epson V800.

Series I: Lavertezzo

Lavertezzo (“Vertezz” in Ticino dialect), with its characteristic stone buildings, is a typical picturesque village in Canton Ticino where visitors can enjoy risotto and other local specialties in a typical grotto. The 18th century Madonna degli Angeli Parish Church sticks up prominently in the town center. It is the only baroque church in the valley.

Ponte dei Salti. This famous bridge in the Verzasca Valley of Ticino, Switzerland is a historical landmark. 400 years after its completion, it draws visitors in droves on a daily basis. After its partial destruction occurred in 1868, it was reconstructed in 1960.

Wood or Stone? These giant stone structures litter the Verzasca valley floor. As immovable as the rock seems, the Verzasca river has flowed over them for centuries removing particles of them year-by-year revealing multi-layered striations. They sometimes look like wood instead of stone.

After crossing into Lavertezzo, the scenery opens up to this vast quarry of rocks and cascades that rage and thunder throughout the valley. The Church steeple is almost always visible no matter where you go.

In this piece, I’ve tried to display the bizarre, abstract lines in the rock. As the rivers water level rises and falls different areas of rock and crevices are exposed, and new compositions are immediately present. The lines mimic the flow of the river itself.
